I swallowed my scream. I went to nudge Rokshar, but the student teacher’s appearance returned to normal.

Ms. Nazima caught me staring. I smiled and pretended I hadn’t seen her morph. My terror must have shown on my face, though, because her gaze narrowed. “Let’s go this way,” she said in a syrupy-sweet voice. She sped up and disappeared behind one of the trees.

“Why is she running?” Rokshar asked, and jogged after her.

I hurried, too, squinting to see Ms. Nazima through the fog.

She was gone.

Rokshar stopped beside me. “Where did she go?”

I turned around, and Ms. Nazima was right behind us! I yelped. “Where did you come from?” The scent of copper and burned meat loaf wafted my way.

“I’ve been here all along,” she said. “You need to stick close to me. You don’t want to get lost, do you?”

Her smile made me nauseous.

“Wait a second,” Rokshar said to her. “You’re here. We’re here.” She looked around. “Where’s Max?”

I took a breath to yell Max’s name, when I heard a bunch of people yelling, “Elijah! Elijah!”
